Struggle with how you look in photos?
Discover why confidence matters more than being photogenic and how to feel relaxed in both Family or Branding Photoshoots.
How you feel about yourself is often half the battle when it comes to how you think you look in photographs.
As a Family Photographer and Brand Photographer, one of the most common things people say to me before a session is:
“I hate photos of myself.”
“I’m awkward in front of the camera.”
“I never like how I look.”
And honestly? It’s rarely the camera they dislike. More often, it’s the story they’ve been telling themselves for years.
The Story We Carry Into the Camera that so many of us have developed a quiet inner narrative around how we look;
The self-criticism.
The focus on flaws.
The habit of noticing everything that feels “wrong” before seeing what is wonderful.
We stand in front of the mirror and zoom straight in on the things we’d change. Then we step in front of a camera carrying all of that energy with us. And if you arrive at a photoshoot already believing you won’t like what you see, chances are you’ll look for proof afterward.
You’ll focus on the one angle you dislike.
The expression that lasted a split second.
The tiny detail nobody else would ever notice.
That’s why confidence and mindset matter so much more than people realise!
It was never about being photogenic. People often think some individuals are simply “photogenic” and others are not. But in my experience as a Photographer, that isn’t really true. What people usually respond to in an image is:
Warmth
Ease
Authenticity
Connection
Personality
Presence
Those things don’t come from perfect bone structure or knowing your angles. They come from how you feel.
As Roald Dahl beautifully said:
“If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams.”
And it’s true.
Confidence softens you.
Kindness lights you up.
Self-acceptance changes the way you carry yourself.

What Changes During a Relaxed Photoshoot?
One of my favourite moments in any Family Photoshoot or Branding Session is when someone stops performing and starts relaxing. They forget about the camera.
They laugh naturally.
They look at their children.
They talk about their business with passion.
They settle into themselves.
That’s when the magic happens.
Because the best photos are rarely about posing perfectly. They’re about catching the version of you that already exists when you feel safe, seen and comfortable. Speak to yourself like you would your Best Friend. Imagine if your best friend stood in front of a mirror and said all the things you sometimes say to yourself. You’d stop them immediately!
You’d remind them they’re beautiful.
You’d notice their warmth.
You’d point out their strength, humour and sparkle.
Yet we often deny ourselves that same kindness. So before your next photo…before the mirror…before judging yourself too harshly;
Be kind.
Be brave.
Celebrate your individuality.
Because the most magnetic thing about you was never perfection. It was always you.

Why This Matters for Family Photos
So many mums delay booking a Family Photoshoot because they “don’t feel ready.”
They want to lose weight first.
Get their hair sorted first.
Feel more confident first.
But while you wait, your children keep growing. This version of your family changes. One day you won’t care about the things you were worried about now. You’ll care that you were there. In the frame. Holding them. Laughing with them.
Why This Matters for Brand Photography
The same goes for business owners delaying Brand Photography. They think they need to look different before showing up. But people connect with real people, not perfection. Authentic, natural Branding Photography builds trust faster than polished distance ever will.

Final Thought:
The change you’ll see in yourself won’t start with the camera; It starts with the way you choose to see yourself.
Be Kind to yourself!!

We chose Rachel to be our wedding photographer last October and can honestly say she was a real pleasure to work with. We have never met someone so enthusiastic and she genuinely loves her work, which shines through.
We have some great photos of our wedding day and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone.

'I was so overwhelmed looking for a photographer to capture the early months of my first baby because I really wanted the photos to be great, and didn't want to spend a small fortune! Rachel was so so brilliant-priced well, very warm and kind and accommodating, and so good at making my little man smile! The photos turned out beautiful, and are so special. We will really treasure them. I would certainly recommend her to anyone!'

We had some beautiful pictures done of our three young sons earlier this year. Rachel was incredibly patient with them whilst they tore around the Discovery Centre in three different directions, pulled silly faces, fell in the mud and refused to be directed and because of her skill we've ended up with some really fabulous photos that completely capture the energy and craziness of my lovely boys. Exactly what I wanted and more!

How can we describe Rachel? The only words I can think of are amazing, professional, kind, brilliant - the list could go on!! We 100% recommend her to anyone who is looking for a photographer. Our house is full of Rachel's images, we have used her at 5 separate occasions including our wedding and most recently to capture our newborn Zachary. Rachel was just amazing with him so relaxed and willing to go with Zac during the shoot, happy to stop for him to feed there was no rush which was perfect! Such a natural with babies. We love her and her work, thank you again

We first met Rachel when she photographed our wedding in 2014. When our son was born earlier this year, without hesitation we contacted Rachel to arrange a new born photoshoot and if we ever want professional photos taking again in the future, we would definitely use Rachel's services again. She immediately put us at ease, is great fun be around and takes lovely pictures. Looking forward to working with her again at some point in the future and would highly recommend her to anyone looking for gorgeous photos from a lovely lady.

'One of the first things I did when planning for our wedding was to book Rachel! I knew Rachel previously, and after following her social media pages for several years I had no doubt that it was her I wanted to photograph our wedding. She accommodated us brilliantly, especially seeing as our venue was definitely not local!
I can often feel awkward having my picture taken, but Rachel made me feel relaxed and comfortable at all times. She joined in with my tribe of bridesmaid's, laughing and joking with us whilst we got ready, and also capturing great moments of the boys' preparations too. I didn't exactly give Rachel any guidelines on what special photographs I would like from the day, and somehow she managed to get them all anyway! I love the mix of natural, candid shots and her styling of the more 'formal' ones.
The only problem we have now is narrowing down our favourite photos for the album!'
