We Still Have Time: Why Family Photographs Matter More Than Ever

October 16, 2026 11:20 am by

From new beginnings and unexpected adventures to the importance of capturing your family as they are right now, a little reminder to pause, celebrate the moments that matter and never stop chasing your dreams.

Life moves quickly, doesn’t it?

One minute you’re walking your little one into their first day of school, holding their hand a little tighter than they hold yours. The next, you’re watching them walk through the gates of secondary school, wondering where on earth the time has gone.

This year has been full of those moments for our family.

Our eldest has finished Primary School and started his next chapter, and watching him grow into a confident, resilient young person has filled me with more pride than I can put into words. From his early school days to becoming a Sports Leader, he’s learnt courage, responsibility and the importance of being part of a team.

One of the highlights was watching his House Team finally win Sports Day after 19 years of losing! Seeing him run the victory lap with the trophy alongside his friend was a moment I’ll treasure forever.

Naturally, there were tears.

And then came the start of secondary school, another huge milestone that reminded me just how quickly childhood passes. He’s taken to it brilliantly so far, and whilst I’m not entirely sure I’m ready for all these changes, he certainly is!

It got me thinking about all the families navigating their own milestones. Little ones starting nursery or primary school, children moving on to secondary school, teenagers preparing for university and parents adjusting to a new chapter of family life.

We’re all moving through these seasons, some wonderful, some challenging, and often a mixture of both and this is exactly why I believe so passionately in Family Photography.

A dream 20 years in the making: My adventure to Kenya

Alongside all the family milestones, I experienced a rather extraordinary milestone of my own.

Earlier this year, I was given the opportunity to travel to Kenya to Photograph a Conservation Project, documenting Coral Reef Restoration with Oceans Alive, witnessing the amazing environmental work they are doing out there and the communities involved in making a difference. It was an opportunity I’d dreamt about more than 20 years ago.

Back then, I imagined myself travelling the world, photographing wildlife and conservation projects. University happened, life took a different direction, and I eventually built my own Photography Business whilst raising my family. But then, more than two decades later, that dream found its way back to me.

I travelled to Kenya with The Leap, an organisation giving young people the opportunity to experience community and conservation work, broaden their horizons and learn about the world beyond their own doorstep.

To be there in my 40s, doing something I’d imagined myself doing as an 18-year-old, was incredibly special.

I cried happy tears. I pinched myself repeatedly. And I came home feeling deeply grateful that life had given me the chance to experience something I’d thought might have passed me by.

It was a powerful reminder that dreams don’t necessarily disappear just because life takes us in another direction. Sometimes they simply take a little longer to find us.

What Kenya taught me about confidence, courage and taking the leap

The trip wasn’t just about photography or travelling somewhere new. It made me reflect on how much I’ve grown over the years.

Life hasn’t always been easy. Our family has experienced some incredibly difficult seasons, and the past few years have brought their fair share of challenges. But I’ve also learnt to trust myself more, to recognise my own strengths and to feel confident in the decisions I make. I’ve learnt to set boundaries, to say no when something doesn’t feel right, and to understand that I don’t have to follow someone else’s expectations of what my life should look like.

These might sound like small things, but for me, they’ve been huge!

I now have a much clearer idea of the life I want to build for myself and my family, and I’m learning to be brave enough to follow that path.

If there’s one thing I’d like to share from this experience, it’s this:

You’re never too old to take the leap. And it’s never too late to follow a dream.

We all have our own journeys, and we never really know what might be waiting around the corner. Sometimes we need to take a chance, step outside our comfort zone and trust ourselves enough to see where it leads.

Why this has made me even more passionate about Family Photography

You might wonder what all of this has to do with photographing families.

For me, it’s everything.

The older I get, the more I realise how precious the everyday moments really are. We spend so much of our time looking ahead, preparing for the next milestone, the next school year, the next holiday or the next big adventure.

And whilst it’s wonderful to have things to look forward to, it’s easy to forget to appreciate the chapter we’re living in right now.
As a mum myself, I know how quickly children change. The little hands that once wrapped around your finger become hands that reach for their friends. The toothless grins evolve, their personalities develop and the children who once needed you for absolutely everything begin to find their independence.

You don’t always notice these changes happening. They creep up on you.

Then one day, you look at an old photograph and wonder how that tiny person became the person standing in front of you.

This is why Family Photographs matter.

They aren’t simply pictures to put in an album or display on the wall. They’re a way of preserving a little piece of your family’s story, creating a homage to and for your family!

They capture the relationships, the personalities, the laughter, the cuddles and the wonderfully ordinary moments that eventually become the memories we treasure most and most importantly, they include you, too!

As Mums, we’re often the ones taking the photographs. We’re documenting the birthdays, the holidays and the everyday adventures, but we’re not always in the pictures ourselves.

You deserve to be part of your family’s story, not just the person recording it.

You don’t need everyone to be perfectly dressed, your house to be immaculate or your children to behave impeccably.
You simply need to show up as you are.

Natural Family Photography in Marlborough and Wiltshire

My approach to Family Photography is relaxed, natural and centred around connection.

I love Photographing families outdoors, making the most of the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, woodland, open fields and that gorgeous golden light that makes autumn so special.

Rather than asking everyone to stand still and smile at the camera throughout the session, I encourage families to walk, play, cuddle, explore and interact naturally.

It’s often in those in-between moments that the magic happens!

The laughter between siblings. The way your youngest reaches for your hand. The look you share with your partner when the children are being completely ridiculous. The spontaneous hug you didn’t ask for. These are the moments that tell your story!

Whether your children are starting school, approaching their teenage years or somewhere in between, a Family Photoshoot is an opportunity to celebrate who you are together, exactly as you are today and you don’t need a special occasion to do it.

Sometimes, the fact that you’re all together, healthy enough to run around, laugh and enjoy one another is reason enough.

Give the gift of family memories this Christmas

As we move towards Christmas, I’ve been thinking about the gifts we give and the things that really matter. There is something lovely about finding the perfect present, but some of the most meaningful gifts aren’t things that can be wrapped in a box.

They’re experiences, memories and reminders of the people we love.

A Family Photography session can make a wonderful Christmas gift, particularly for grandparents who would love updated photographs of their children and grandchildren.

Imagine giving them a beautiful framed photograph of their favourite people, or a collection of images capturing the family just as they are this year.
It’s a gift that can be enjoyed every day and become even more precious as the years pass.

If you’ve been thinking about updating your family photographs, or would like to give a Family Photoshoot as a Christmas gift, now is a lovely time to start planning.

My relaxed Family Photography sessions around Marlborough and Wiltshire are designed to create natural, meaningful photographs that you can enjoy for years to come.

We still have time

If my adventure to Kenya has taught me anything, it’s that life rarely unfolds exactly as we expect.

Dreams can take unexpected routes. Children grow up. New chapters begin. And sometimes the things we think we have plenty of time to do, become the things we wish we’d done sooner.

So let’s make time to pause.

To celebrate where we are.

To appreciate the people beside us.

And to capture the moments we don’t want to forget.

Because one day, today’s ordinary moments will be the memories we would give anything to revisit.

If you’re ready to capture your family’s story, I’d love to hear from you.

Whether you’re looking to update your Family Photographs before Christmas, celebrate a new chapter or simply create beautiful images of your family as they are right now, let’s make it happen.

I offer relaxed, natural Family Photography sessions in Marlborough, Wiltshire and the surrounding areas, creating photographs full of connection, personality and life.
